Modelling the production, profit, and greenhouse gas emissions of Irish sheep flocks divergent in genetic merit

چکیده

Sheep production industries face the challenge of increasing farm and profit while reducing environmental impacts. Genetic selection using multi-trait breeding indices can be used to improve flock productivity, profitability, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensities (kg CO2-eq /kg product), however validation improved performance animals ranked higher on at a level is required. Phenotypic data from 387,580 records born between 2018 2020 known genetic merit in commercial flocks were inputted an established bio-economic model. Two contrasting compared, ewes High (top 20%) Irish replacement Index bred with rams terminal indices, Low (bottom indices. The two then simulated life cycle assessment estimate GHG profile for both systems. Flock weaning rates 1.70 1.53 lambs weaned per ewe presented flocks, respectively. sold 0.17 more ewe, equating 3.29 kg lamb carcass than ewes; also earlier age. greater resulted additional €18/ewe net flock. Although total flock, lower 21.7 23.3 intensity was due dilution effect being drafted slaughter ealier. results suggest sheep producers make substantial gains through according national their impact, farmers should consider when purchasing rams, particularly sires lambs.

Modelling of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wheat Production in Irrigated and Rain-Fed Systems in Khorasan Razavi Province, Iran

Agriculture has a key role in greenhouse gas emissions.  As such, the present study aimed to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions from wheat production in irrigated and rain-fed systems. The primary data were collected from 116 wheat farmers. The results showed that the total greenhouse gas emissions from wheat production in irrigated and rain-fed systems were 637.8 and 65.12 kgCO2eq, respecti...

Beef Production and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

doi:10.1289/ehp.11562 Cohn et al. (2008) suggested that birth cohort trends in breast cancer rates for women under 50 years of age are consistent with declining use of DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) after 1959. They cited Weiss (2007) in claiming that increased detection and treatment of in situ breast cancer must be considered when interpreting recent trends in breast cancer mortality r...

Greenhouse gas emissions in livestock production systems

Agriculture is responsible for a significant proportion of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (perhaps 18% globally), and therefore has the potential to contribute to efforts to reduce emissions as a means of minimising the risk of dangerous climate change. The largest contributions to emissions are attributed to ruminant methane production and nitrous oxide from animal waste and fert...

A Comparison of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions From the Sheep Industry With Beef Production in Canada

Sheep production in Canada is a small industry in comparison to other livestock systems. Because of the potential for expansion of the sheep industry in Canada, the GHG emissions budget of this industry was assessed in this paper. The GHG emissions from Canadian lamb production were compared with those from the Canadian beef industry using the ULICEES model. The GHG emission intensity of the Ca...

A Comparative Study of Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Canola Production

In this research, the energy flow and production energy indices of canola cultivation in Trakya province of Turkey, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces of Iran were compared. Diesel fuel and chemical fertilizer inputs were the highest consumer of energy in the production of canola in these three regions. The results indicated that despite the higher energy use of machinery in Trakya province of T...
